Teōtīhuacān

Great trip to Mexico City and Teotihuacan! I have heard a lot about how dangerous Mexico City is, so I was actually a bit worried about going there, but in the end everything turned out to be just fine. Of course, I did not really leave the city center when i was sightseeing, except for a nice trip to the old Aztec city of Teōtīhuacān.

The weather was great, so I really had nothing to complain about. Just the trip out of Mexico City was well worth my time. It is the most populous urban area in the world, with approximately 23 million people living in and around the city. As soon as we had left the center, large areas of slum spread out over the mountains, and they continued for many kilometers.

As we approached the site of Teōtīhuacān, the two large pyramids could be seen in the distance.

It was a city, which at its peak around 100-400 ac had up to 250.000 inhabitants, and thus was comparable to the largest cities around the world at that time.

The main street - the "Avenue of the Dead" is 2 kilometers long, ending with the Pyramid of the Moon. Along the road, more or less halfway, is the pyramid of the sun, the tallest of the two.The site is really amazing, and from the top of the pyramid of the sun is a great view of the whole area.

Way cool.. I can't wait to hear you actually pronounce the name of the place ;)

Well, it is not that difficult. Wikipedia is your friend: "The name is pronounced [teotiˈwakan] in Nahuatl, with the accent on the syllable wa, and by normal Nahuatl orthographic conventions a written accent would not appear in that position."

Piece of cake!
